10 years ago my group of girlfriends started a tradition after a crazy idea came to us on one of our many nights in Magnetic Cafe: what if we go on a girls’ weekend?
Rules:
- No boys talking – we were struggling a lot with boy problems at the time, so this was a much needed rule!
- Have fun!
- Do things we have been talking about doing for ages!
I know we had a few more but I can’t find the paper where we wrote it all. Yes, we wrote them down! On a page of my “bullet journal” at the time. And you know what? I know that one of us still keeps it because I saw it not a long time ago. The weekend was that important to us. Here’s how you can make it for your group of friends too:
Set a date
Finding a date may seem the difficultest part of it all. When are we all going to be available at the same time for a whole weekend? You can use Doodle to help on this. But it’s possible, I promise.
Choose a place
Last year we went to our “beach house” in Alentejo, the first year we stayed in my girlfriend’s college room near the beach (we were already fancy back there!), another year we stayed at my other girlfriend parent’s house near the beach with an amazing pool. Anyone see a beach trend over here? 😀 Whatever the place you have available, it will work. Continue to the next step.
Make a list of rules
Are you struggling with something lately? Work stresses, boy issues, family pressure… whatever it is, make it a rule not to talk about it during this weekend. It can and it’s totally ok to have a rule for each of you if you’re struggling with different things. We did that in the first year and it was amazing!
And activities!
Note down all the activities you would love to try during that weekend – explore what you have around the area you will be staying. Our first year we were able to combine: tennis, surf classes, a night out, and watching an amazing sunset from the building’s rooftop. Last year we needed to rest, so: “fancy” dinner, beach day… Choose together what you all are craving and put it on paper. Start planning it. Book the classes, reserve the restaurants, make a “draft schedule”…
Meal plan
Ohh, yes, we did it! This is very important if you are on a budget, especially true 10 years ago when we were still in college. We chose a few recipes, went shopping or packed things from home with us, and cooked all the meals at “home”. If you are a bit more easy on money now, you can just make a list of places you plan to go eat and make reservations. Don’t forget the fancy drinks!
Have fun!
This is the most important part. Leave all the rest at home. Have fun! Even I, with a kid and another one on the way, can do it. The kiddo stayed with his daddy last year and I plan on doing the same again, not sure if this year because baby F will be too small, but as soon as I can. Because these weekends are a must. You need to remember how you were together and how good these people are to your soul. I know I never regret it.
What do you think? Are you booking your Girls’ Trip right away?
