This summer we achieved a big dream as a family: going on our first camper van trip. Here is why we loved it and think it is the perfect family holiday.
Being able to stop and take care of kids anywhere
“Always home” is the best way to describe it. The first day was tricky but as soon as we got a groove on organizing the van, this was so much more easy. Toddler needs to go to the bathroom? Baby needs to eat? Change a diaper? Let’s park and do it. Right where we are without needing anything else.
Quick to pack and leave the site whenever to explore
The first day we arrived to the campsite I went crazy stressed finding all the stuff I needed to cook dinner, make the beds, use the bathroom. I didn’t knew where half of our stuff were. Now looking back, I would organize the van and make all the beds before leaving. Our camper van had a lot of storage, so we took advantage of it. After organizing everything, packing and moving sites was much more quicker.
Sunset dinners
One thing that comes to my mind as soon as I think about our camper van trip is the sunset dinners. Cooking and having dinner with the most gorgeous sunset, either dinning outside on the good days or watching it through the window inside, nothing beats that. And plus points when kids are so tired from playing that sleep earlier and parents get to enjoy it by ourselves. I truly loved it.
Home cooking
It wasn’t planned, but we ended up eating in 99% of our meals. We planned for the first 3 days since we were going to be doing the Costa Vicentina and no restaurant we wanted to try there, then arriving to Algarve, we just continued. Cooking and eating in the van was so easy and comfortable for the whole family that we just prefered doing it.
Cheaper
Although the rent of the van was not cheap, after our first night we understood our van, having solar panels, was able to sustain itself through the night. Result: no electricity needed to pay on campsites. You can always stay out of sites, but us being our first time and with kids perffered the safety of them. Plus, if you choose to cook at “home” as we did, is even cheaper. We never cooked at home this often in our family beach cabin! Plus most campsites we stayed on had pool access included in the price, which was awesome for our toddler! And for our family of 4 the price was around 20-25€ per night.
I bet I missed a lot more points to this blogpost but baby is crying and toddler need to be picked up from school. So, hope you enjoyed this one and hope to see you here next Monday for another better put together blogpost!
